Louis Maqhubela is a pre-eminent painter of his generation in South Africa. The paintings stem from his inner make-up, his memories, and the fact that he is African, but they are not about Africa in any descriptive sense. His pictorial language uses luminous abstract forms which resonate with a spiritual quality that comes close to that of Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky. They communicate a sense of wonder, of joy and of mystery.

His work is represented in major public collections in South Africa, in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London and recently, his work was acquired by the National Museum of African Art, Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC.
